A Journey from a Design Nomad to the Homes of the Mediterranean

A Journey from a Design Nomad to the Homes of the Mediterranean

Between the years 1990 and 2003, aboard a 13-meter sailing vessel, I set course from the North Sea, navigating through the Strait of Gibraltar and crossing the Mediterranean to reach the Aegean. I moored in countless harbors, anchored in hidden coves. I saw the lands, spent the nights, and greeted the dawns. In 2011, I ventured further—to the shores of the Adriatic, tracing its inlets, bays, ports, and cities. In this sea that cradles three continents, I encountered bays shaped by its shimmering touch, harbors, towns, neighborhoods, homes, and people. It was as if the Mediterranean itself was a single, unified home—its gulfs, harbors, cities, villages, districts, and cultures all resident under one expansive roof. I witnessed tangible evidence that the Mediterranean’s waters, air, soil, sun, its people, myths, flora, fauna, settlements, homes, and objects constitute a profound and indivisible whole. I drew inspiration from this totality. In the architecture and furnishings of Mediterranean homes, I sought out their commonalities and distinctions. I explored the sameness in their differences, and the differences hidden within their sameness—trying to understand the what and the why. The Mediterranean is a suspension of time without end.
