Design Community
The unprecedented changes spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic led us to challenge the existing capabilities of living spaces, initiating the BIOSPACES project. Inspired by the recognition of the limitations posed by high-rise buildings, which often lack natural light and fresh air, particularly crucial elements during times of crisis, the BIOSPACES initiative advocates for open-air environments that champion environmental sustainability and collective wellbeing.

As part of this research, Koleksiyon partnered with wearable technology-focused fashion designer Arzu Kaprol and textile expert Melike Altınışık to explore new spatial offerings. However, these efforts took an urgent turn in 2023 when Turkey experienced a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that devastated ten major cities and affected over 14 million people. We utilised our research findings from the BIOSPACES initiative to develop specific solutions to cater to the needs of the community, such as protective sleeping bags that shielded individuals from wet, damp conditions and cold temperatures.
This rapid response was crucial, as many institutions were unprepared for the scale of the disaster. Working quickly, we were able to produce the final model of the sleeping bags within 24 hours, leveraging social media to communicate their development and rally support from fellow organisations and entities in the textile sector. The result was a tremendous impact that saved numerous lives, highlighting the power of collaboration, innovation, and quick action in times of crisis.
